2009 Pinot Noir, de Coelo \

2009 Pinot Noir, de Coelo "Terra Neuma"

Terra Neuma’s super soft, round entry carries through the palate giving the wine a polished mouthfeel. Ripe, red fruit essences tantalize the nose, while fresh, spicy tobacco and chalky, mineral nuances are cues to its coastal origin.

About This Wine

Our 2009 de Coelo, Terra Neuma is derived from our Pinot Noir estate vineyard on the Sonoma Coast. This vineyard, nestled five miles from the Pacific Ocean, offers ideal growing conditions for a genuine Pinot Noir. The result of this cool, wet climate is an outstanding, lighter Pinot Noir with broader ripe fruit and low alcohol. Terra Neuma and its “brother” Quintus are cultivated side-by-side, but each has soil that is unique and distinctive, and so is each wine. Situated on the steeper slope of this hilly property, Terra Neuma develops in soil that is subject to slightly more erosion, resulting in thinner top soil. As a result, these grapes ripen sooner and mature faster. The soil and chemistry of these unique blocks are consistent; so much so that we enable the character of each to distinguish itself by bottling these brother wines separately.

Although 2009 marks the third year in a row of below average rainfall, it was the unique weather conditions that defined this harvest in particular. First, rains in May took the edge off the drought and were responsible for the beautiful, full-strength photosynthetic canopies we had going into harvest. Second, was the roller coaster weather throughout the summer; we had 10-12 days of cool weather followed by 2-3 days of very warm weather. The heat wasn’t high enough and didn’t last long enough, but it gave the grapes a push towards ripening. The cool weather returned and we were back to slow, even ripening. Third, flavor development was further ahead in 2009. The heat bumps brought up the flavors and the cool weather kept the structure and acid intact.
Winemaker Notes: Everything about this wine is meticulous, consistent, and pure, from the Demeter-certified Biodynamic growing practices to the hands-off winemaking process and the taste of Terra Neuma itself. Unfiltered and fermented with native yeast, this wine tells an authentic story because it hasn’t been over-manipulated or diluted with outside additives.
Production: 465 cases produced.
