Vineyard Notes: The fruit that goes into this wine is grown on our estate, here on Sonoma Mountain. It comes from a very unusual hillside that is literally a big pile of obsidian. The glassy, black rock helps this block hold the heat while helping ripen the fruit. The rocks are like thousands of heaters that hold warmth deep into the evening. This block is not only full of obsidian, but it is also very steep and terraced so that every vine has perfect exposure for even ripening.
Winemaker Notes: Consider this a wine that showcases the diversity of terroir within individual plots of the Benziger Family Estate Vineyard. It’s made with the most traditional hands-on methods. The grapes were hand sorted in the vineyard, fermented in small tanks and serviced by hand. Native yeast and malolactic bacteria were employed throughout. The wine was aged for 20 months in French oak barrels (35% new) and bottled in June of 2013.

Other Notes:

2011 was a very cool growing season, with late precipitation in June. Around mid-summer heavy rains came and allowed vines to increase vigor -creating lush full canopies. Long hang times allowed the fruit to develop evenly and created complex flavors and aromas.
