Vineyard Notes: The planting of deCoelo Vineyard was inspired by creating true wines of spirit from intricate geologies, an extreme climate and a willingness to explore new vistas of winegrowing by incorporating biodynamic farming principles. The deCoelo Vineyard, located 5 miles from the Pacific Ocean , is a 23 acre vineyard planted to 5 different clones producing 4 distinct wines, one of them being the Abore Sacre, the sacred tree, block. Planted in 2008, the first harvest created this initial offering in 2012. The climate is of maritime influence remaining very cool and moist throughout the growing season. The soils are classic Gold Ridge soils with more clay substructure and the grapes are grown under Certified Demeter Biodynamic practices. ABORE SACRE BLOCK: Positioned at 750 feet elevation on a south east facing ridge, Abore Sacra consists of only one clone, Calera. The Calera clone creates a wine that are deep in color, abundant with inviting full and fresh black fruit aromas and a velvety soft and lingering finish, a true stand alone clone. The name Abore Sacre is an homage to the Engleman family and the lifelong pursuit of preserving this land over numerous generations. Mela Engleman, the current matriarch, tells of stories of her father, and his father before him, riding their horse over the property to survey the daily situation and timing their ride to take an afternoon siesta under the large oak tree in the middle of where the Abore Sacre block is planted. Sacred as the tree is, Benziger Family left the majestic tree in place and planted the vineyard around it to preserve and respect the legacy of the Engleman family.
Production Notes: The individual clone selections were harvested separately, fermented in small lots in open top fermenters utilizing indigenous yeast at cool temperatures to stimulate slow phenolic extraction. Average fermentation of the individual lots ranged from 12-15 days. Pressed to oak, malolactic fermentation took place in barrels, a majority of new tight grain French oak. All clone lots are aging separately and the blend will be bottled in mid-December.

Other Notes:

VINTAGE: 2012 proved to be a seamless year for growing extreme climate coastal Pinot Noir. Dry spring days were ideal for even budbreak and cane growth. Normally high mildew pressure was minimized by drier than normal conditions in the late spring and early summer and prevailing winds that helped to keep the humidity low. Flowering and set was completed in A short and very even cycle. The vines were extremely balanced and crop thinning virtually unnecessary. Verasion was fast and even. Full flavor maturity was reached at lower sugar levels while still retaining postured and vibrant acidity providing lift and length. Other vintages showing a similar and memorable pedigree are 2007 and 1991.
