BENZIGER FARMING PRACTICES
ORGANICS
Organic farms emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations. To achieve organic certification, grapes are grown without the use of most conventional pesticides; fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge; bioengineering; or ionizing radiation. Before a product can be labeled "organic," a USDA accredited certifier inspects the vineyard annually to make sure the grower is in compliance with all USDA organic standards. Wineries that make wine with organically grown grapes are also certified and inspected.
A certified organic processor, Benziger makes several wines from certified organic grapes, which because of limited production are available only at the Winery. This will soon change, as Benziger crafted its first nationally available, wine made with organic grapes with the 2005 vintage. Currently, 20 percent of Benziger’s total wine production is made with organic grapes.
