Vintage
Vintage 2001 saw the return of a warmer, earlier season following three vintages in a row noted for their coolness. Bloom enjoyed nearly perfect conditions for fruit set followed by a long, warm summer. Harvesting of the Sauvignon Blanc began on August 20th, marking the earliest start in recent memory.
Vinification
For our Sancerre-style Fumé Blanc, our winemaking focus is to craft a fresh, bright wine with a nice subtle grassiness and a hint of vanilla from oak aging. After strict canopy management and hand sorting, seventeen lots were tank fermented in stainless steel. None of the wines underwent malolactic fermentation, and 90% of the final blend was aged for four months in French oak. The special care that encouraged the perfect fruit/acid balance in the vineyard was also taken in the cellar to ensure the same balance in the bottle. The wine was bottled in March 2002. Alcohol: 13.5%, Total acidity: .57, pH: 3.32, Residual sugar: dry.
Tasting Notes
Aromas of sweet citrus and cut alfalfa give way to flavors of pink grapefruit, melon, vanilla and fresh herbs with a bright, crisp structure and long, clean finish. Our 2001 Fumé Blanc is best enjoyed now or over the next year.
