Vintage
Each year, as part of our Reserve program, we select the best blocks from the best vineyards, which are then kept separate through the winemaking process until being selected, barrel-by-barrel, for the final blend. The 2001 growing season saw the return of a warmer, earlier season following three consecutive vintages noted for their coolness. Bloom enjoyed nearly perfect conditions for fruit set followed by a long, warm summer.
Vinification
The lots with the finest track record were culled and re-selected again at the winery. These were 100% cold (53 degrees F) barrel-fermented for about five weeks, underwent partial malolactic fermentation and were aged for seven months in French oak barrels. The finest barrels were selected, blended and bottled in July of 2002. Alcohol 14%, Total acidity .65, 3.53, Residual sugar .08. 1,464 cases produced.
Tasting Notes
This Reserve Chardonnay displays both richness and complexity, on an elegant framework. It is fleshy in texture, full-bodied, and intensely flavored, with nuances of pear, peach, tangerine, lemon peel, vanilla and toast. Very long finish. Serve with crab cakes, grilled prawns, seared ahi, pasta primavera or grilled chicken. Our Reserve Chardonnay drinks well upon release and can cellar for up to six years.
