Vintage
The 1998 harvest was later and shorter than usual (October 17 - November 4) due to a very cold, wet winter, followed by a long cool growing season, which finally warmed up in September and October. The result was a small, very intense crop level that had enjoyed extended hang time, which provided intense varietal character, lovely concentration and intensity.
Vinification
Five lots of grapes from seven vineyards were vinified, including those from the Taylor and Carreras vineyards in Alexander valley -- both of which have old-clone vines in excess of 100 years old. These were culled and individually fermented in small fermenters for seven to eight days at 75-88° Fahrenheit with daily pumping over. The wine was aged in American oak for 14 months prior to blending and bottling in May of 2000. Alcohol 14.5.0%, total acidity .60, pH 3.56. 3,103 cases produced.
Tasting Notes
Raspberry, cherry, allspice and vanillin toast in the nose. Full and rich with bright berry fruit in the mouth, and a soft, round finish. This wine is excellent now or with up to four years more aging.
