Vintage

The grapes for this Zinfandel are from the Carreras and Taylor Vineyards in Dry Creek Valley. Both are "old-vine" zinfandel vineyards with vines as old as 100 years. The smaller than usual yields of 1999 came as a result of the previous year's rain. During the '99 season, good weather during bud break and bloom together with cooler than normal temperatures throughout the summer months allowed the grapes to hang on the vine longer, maturing slowly and evenly. A warm spell in late September balanced bright, fully ripened flavors with the good maturity. Harvested September 25-28, this Zinfandel stands out as one of the stars of the '99 vintage, with equal parts ripeness and complexity.

Vinification

Equal amounts from both Carreras Vineyard and Taylor Zinfandel were kept separate in six lots throughout winemaking. Fermentations in small vessels were extended for up to 18 days for maximum extraction. The wine was then aged in American oak for 15 months prior to blending and bottling in April of 2001.. Alcohol 15.0%, total acidity .74, RS .06, pH 3.59. 2,080 cases produced.

Tasting Notes

Our 1999 Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel presents black raspberry, plum and vanillin toast in the nose and bright berry fruit, cocoa and spicy oak in the mouth, with soft tannins and a round finish. This wine is a wonderful complement to savory grilled meats and pasta Bolognese. Drink now or cellar for up to 5 years.
