What Others Are Saying About Biodynamics

Biodynamics by benziger

Biodynamics is the highest form of organic farming in the world. It goes beyond the elimination of all chemicals. It incorporates the environment in and around the vineyard to produce wines of authenticity, place and ultimately the passion of the people who make it. To illustrate the key concepts of Biodynamics on our ranch, Mike Benziger created the following pyramid. It should be read from the bottom up, as concepts are listed in order of impact beginning with observation.

The Spirit of Tribute

Of the many benefits of Biodynamics, from the environmental to wine quality, we are most passionate about the connection it forges between wine drinkers and the wines crafted on our estate. "I think people want to know how the things they eat and drink are grown and made," says Mike Benziger. "We believe Biodynamics connects them to the spirit that lives in our wines."

SPIRIT Think of spirit as connection. Wine connects us with the universe through the sun and photosynthesis. Wine connects us to the earth through the roots of a grapevine and a compatible, loving location. Wine connects us to each other in the ritual of sharing good wine, food and appreciation.

EARTH The compassionate and nurturing qualities of Mother Earth and Sonoma Mountain soils allow for deep root penetration and give the vine an ability to express itself fully and truly. A plant connects us to the earth through the roots of the grapevine. Roots center a plant Mother Earth provides the beautiful and loving nest for these roots.

WATER The water holding capacity of Sonoma Mountain soils allows us to farm with minimal irrigation. Water has the qualities of assimilation and cohesion as well as of a mirror. The effect is to unify and concentrate the uniqueness of this special site. It is easy to see how water mediates and reflects the attributes of a place in the personality and character of the wine.

AIR Symbolizes respiration, circulation and healthy metabolism. A plant that is in balance with its environment locally and universally exhibits a harmony with its surroundings. Grapes and wine produced in such harmony (not under stress) tend to make themselves with very little intervention from us. Hence, they reflect the most pure (ego-free) and authentic flavors possible.

FIRE The warmth and light of the sun connects us to the cosmos through photosynthesis. Is it the light, warmth and fire of the sun that provides the most subtle and locationally unique (micro-climate) flavors in a wine. Fire stands for transformation purification and integration. Most importantly, it is the sunlight within wine that inspires and enthuses us when we enjoy wine together.
