VINEYARD | Our de Coelo estate vineyard is perched on a rugged hilltop five miles from the Pacific Ocean, where rocky, shallow soils and the cooling fog off Bodega Bay create ideal conditions for exceptional Pinot Noir. Because of the very cool temperatures in this part of the Sonoma Coast, the 25-acre, certified-Biodynamic de Coelo is truly on the edge of where Pinot Noir will grow. With no margin for error on this site, our vineyard team works overtime to ensure we capitalize on each ray of sun. Every cluster is positioned for direct exposure to elements. Cane pruning adds a third, horizontal dimension to the ripening. Believers in personal observation and deep connection to the land, we figure that each vine has been tended by hand no less than fourteen times before the grapes are ready for harvest.
VINTAGE | A dry winter led to a fairly early bud break in 2007. Overall the growing season was evenly paced with a just a few heat spikes in the early summer. Warm August weather started harvest early, especially for early ripening varietals like Sauvignon Blanc. This vintage was certainly smaller in quantity than 2006, but in many cases the lower yields meant more concentrated flavors.
WINE | At de Coelo, the climate tends to produce lean, elegant Pinots with beautiful clean acidity that provides structure to the wine. A classic Old World style Pinot, our 2007 has bright, red fruit flavors, a hint of spice and rich earthiness from the Biodynamic soil.
