Benziger Family Winery

de Coelo

Five miles from the ocean, between the small coastal towns of Bodega and Freestone lies de Coelo Vineyard. The property was virgin soil and we were recruited by the previous owners because of our Biodynamic farming practices. This vineyard experiences fog from the ocean and gets more rain than we are used to here in the Sonoma Valley.  Thus, the de Coelo vineyard is dedicated entirely to crafting Pinot Noirs with an authentic sense of place. The Sonoma Coast is experiencing the renaissance and wild west feel that occurred in Burgundy’s Cote D’Or during the 60s and 70s.

Using the Burgundian model for growing Pinot Noir, we farm individual blocks at de Coelo and produce three distinctly different Pinots from this property: Quintus, Terra Neuma and Arbore Sacra. We like to think of our wines from de Coelo as Pinot in 3D; the three dimensions being aromatics, flavor and texture. de Coelo is a Demeter-Certified Biodynamic vineyard.

2014 de Coelo Pinot Noir, Terra Neuma

Terra Neuma has a soft, round entry which carries through the palate giving the wine a polished mouthfeel. This Pinot is chock full of lush, red fruit essences that are entwined in fresh, spicy tobacco and chalky mineral nuances. This graceful wine will age beautifully with its poised acid.

2014 de Coelo Pinot Noir, Quintus

Quintus is controlled by horizontal boundaries. Cherry and raspberry aromas are duplicated on the palate. with a nice melding of tannin and acid, and a beautiful electric finish. Most notable is its impressive silky, satin-like texture.

2014 de Coelo Pinot Noir, Camena

This inaugural bottling is one of our smallest Pinot Noir productions to date, and has been elegantly crafted to reveal a heavily red-fruit nose, and a dynamic and evolving palate consisting of cherry and pomegranate, while touches of hibiscus and pepper appear when sipped. Silky tannins and light oak maintain this Pinot’s delicate, unforgettable mouthfeel.

2014 de Coelo Chardonnay

This medium-bodied Chardonnay has a big bouquet escorted by substantial flavors. Aromas of honeysuckle and apple blossoms waft gently around as subtle apricot emanates from the glass. The cool climate of the Sonoma Coast contributes to this wine’s fresh crisp notes of pineapple, orange sherbet and a trace essence of almond. A kiss of oak rides a wave of body and length toward the finish, with persistent sweetness of pineapple alongside a streak of minerality. This wine is impressive as a food wine, and sublime as a splendiferous sipper.
